BNP’s black-flag march a mark of its failure

Terming the BNP's black-flag march a "mourning procession", Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader today said it indicates that the party's one-point movement has fallen flat on its face.

"Why did they march with black flags? Has any of their leaders died? They in fact held the programme for expressing their failure to make the one-point movement a success," said Quader while addressing a "peace rally" in front of AL central office in the capital's Gulistan.

Dhaka city (south) unit AL organised the rally protesting the "terror and anarchy" of the BNP-Jamaat.

Claiming that the BNP's procession failed to woo general people, Quader said, "How could they call it a mass procession that did not have the participation of commoners? We will show the BNP what a mass procession is."

Regarding the BNP's demand for resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, he said, "Why would she resign? Around 70 percent people of the country like her and want to vote for her."

Quader told the BNP not to daydream about assuming power.

Stating that the BNP is panicking people over sanctions and the new US visa policy, he said, "Sanctions and the visa policy should be applied to the BNP for carrying out movements blocking roads.

"The US said the visa policy will be applied to those who would obstruct the process of fair elections. So why is it not being applied to the BNP? Quader asked.

Urging the party activists to unite, the AL general secretary said, "If we remain united, there is no political force in the country that can defeat us."

Speaking at the event, AL Joint General Secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif said, "They [BNP leaders] have become frustrated as they failed to make their movement a success. You have done much; now I request you to return home. But if you try to hatch any conspiracy, we would resist it with iron hands."

Among others, AL Presidium Member Mostafa Jalal Mohiuddin, Organising Secretary SM Kamal Hossain and executive member Sanzida Khanam spoke at the programme.
