Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal yesterday said it is the DMP commissioner's responsibility to make Dhaka liveable for the two crore residents, as BNP has threatened to bring down the government by making the city come to a standstill on December 10.

BNP said many people would gather to support it, and that's why the police commissioner has allocated Suhrawardy Udyan for its rally, Kamal said while addressing reporters after the inauguration of the newly-built Shaistaganj police station building in Habiganj.

"If BNP people gather in front of the party office in Nayapaltan, defying the police commissioner ban, then the commissioner will take necessary action," he said.

Meanwhile, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun yesterday said they believe that BNP will hold the programme at the venue for which the authorities have given permission.

If BNP people gather in front of the party office in Nayapaltan, defying the police commissioner ban, then the commissioner will take necessary action.

He came up with the remark while replying to a question from reporters at Rajarbagh Police Lines.

Expressing hope, the police chief said BNP will withdraw its decision to hold the rally in front of the party office. "There's still time; we will wait."

Asked about BNP's allegation that party leaders and activists are being arrested in the name of special drives, the IGP said police are working within the law and are not acting politically.

"No one is being arrested breaching the rules," he said.

"We have stepped up operations to nab the fugitive militants. And we will look into the complaints that they [BNP] have made," said Mamun.

In reply to a question, Mamun said, "There is no specific information of sabotage centring the December 10 rally... But we are planning to keep the issue of sabotage in mind."
