MPs from Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) today formed a human chain demanding that the party Chairperson Khaleda Zia be released immediately and sent abroad for better treatment.

The human chain was formed in front of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban around 11:30am today.

Barrister Rumeen Farhana, a member of the parliament, said, "At the moment, our Chairperson Khaleda Zia is fighting for her life, but she is not permitted to travel abroad for better treatment."

"Begum Zia went to jail on foot. The government will have to explain how she became so ill in just three years. If something happens to her, the government will be held accountable," she said.

"Khaleda Zia is a victim of political vengeance. The government, according to section 401, has the authority to make any decision it wants. The law minister, however, is misinterpreting this," she added.

Another BNP MP, Harunur Rashid, said, "If Khaleda Zia is released, there will be a new impetus in the country. For this reason, the government is not releasing her."

Hurunur Rashid called the law minister's explanation "ridiculous".

"Awami League has killed democracy before and is doing it now," he said.

Six of the seven BNP MPs were present in the human chain.
