BNP-cop clash: 7 BNP men detained in Netrakona

Police yesterday detained seven BNP men for their alleged involvement in hurling brick chips at police during a clash in Netrakona's Durgapur upazila.

The detainees are Imam Hasan Abu Chan, former president of Durgapur upazila BNP; Ataur Rahman Farid, convener of Durgapur municipality BNP; Abu Siddique Rukku, Durgapur municipality Jubo Dal convener; and BNP activists Shah Alam, Mohammad Mahi, Mohammad Arman, and Md Arif Mia, according to BNP leaders and police.

Johirul Alam Bhuiyan, the convener of Durgapur upazila BNP, alleged that when BNP men were on the way to the municipal independence memorial to place floral wreaths, police waylaid them resulting in an altercation around 10:00am.

At one stage, police attacked BNP men, resulting in chases and counter-chases, alleged Johirul.

Police fired blanks during the incident.

Abu Chan, Rukku, and Chhatra Dal activist Shishir were admitted to Durgapur Upazila Health Complex with injuries, Johurul said.

Contacted, Shibirul Islam, officer-in-charge of Durgapur Police Station, meanwhile, claimed the BNP men attacked police first and later they retaliated.

He also admitted to firing four rounds of blanks to bring the situation under control.

Sub-Inspectors Sanwar Hossain and Shuvashish Ganguly filed two separate cases against the BNP men over the attack on police and obstructing them in conducting their duties.

However, police did not disclose the number of accused in the cases.

The detainees were being interrogated at the police station as of filing this report.
