Alliance with ‘one-man-show’ parties will be fruitless
Grassroots tell BNP leaders
A section of BNP grassroots leaders said the party should take a decision about its alliance partner Jamaat-e-Islami and Jatiya Oikyafront's Gonoforum.
They said leaders of both Jamaat and Gonoforum think only about protecting their own interests.
They claimed that Jamaat supporters do not even hesitate to cast vote for Awami League when it comes to save their interests, while Gonoforum leaders do not recognise the contribution of BNP founder Ziaur Rahman in the 1971 Liberation War.
BNP's district level leaders from Rajshahi, Khulna and Barishal claimed it during a meeting with their high-ups at the party chairperson's Gulshan office yesterday, meeting sources told The Daily Star.
With the meeting, the BNP concluded a series of closed-door meetings called to hear from grassroots leaders about the party's possible strategies ahead of the next national election.
In the final day of the meetings, 65 leaders expressed their opinions on the possible strategies. Many of them said the "so-called" alliance of the party will not bring anything good for it.
They said forming alliance with parties which are basically "one man show" was fruitless. Rather, a tough movement should be launched under the leadership of the BNP.
Party's grassroots leaders are ready for such a movement, they said, adding that the party should strengthen its organisation strength in the capital before launching the movement.
Executive committee member Kamrul Islam Sajal told the meeting that the party would not get any benefits by forming alliance with a "one-man-show" party.
Pirojpur district BNP leader Alamgir Hossain said the BNP should take a decision about Jamaat as it has come burdensome for them.
After the meeting, party's Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir told journalists that all the suggestions and opinions were recorded and the party would decide its next course of action based on them.
In 2018, the party held its last executive committee meeting at Le Meridian hotel just four days before Khaleda landed in jail.
No executive committee meeting has been held since.
