Police detained 24 activists of Islami Chhatra Shibir, a student organisation backed by the controversial political party Jamaat-e-Islami, in Kishoreganj today.

The names of the detainees could not be known immediately.

On information that a group of Shibir men were planning to create anarchy in the town's Pyaradanga and Natun Jailkhana areas, a police team was dispatched there, said Mohammad Daud, officer-in-charge of Kishoreganj Sadar Model Police Station, reports our Mymensingh correspondent.

Sensing police presence, they threw two crude bombs, injuring a policeman, said the OC.

Later, the Shibir men were held from the spot and were taken to the police station.

Police had to fire 17 rounds of blank shots to disperse the agitated Shibir men, claimed the OC.

Denying the allegations made by police, Maulana Nazmul Islam, secretary of the Kishoreganj district unit of Jamaat-e-Islami. said the student body brought out a procession marking the 46th founding anniversary of the organisation.

After the peaceful rally, when they were returning home, police picked up them, claimed the Jamaat leader, demanding immediate release of the detainees.
