Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) members reportedly beat up two people involved with the management committee election of a high school yesterday (July 24, 2022) in the presence of police and magistrate at Harirampur upazila in Manikganj.

The incident took place at Jhitka Anandamohan High School yesterday afternoon, reports our Manikganj correspondent quoting Syed Mizanur Islam, officer-in-charge of Harirampur Police Station.

Acknowledging the matter of BCL men beating up the elected high school guardian representatives, the OC said police took prompt action after the incident.

Locals said that for the past few days, tension had been brewing between the supporters of popular musician and MP Momtaz Begum along with supporters of Harirampur Upazila Chairman and District Awami League's Relief and Social Welfare Secretary Dewan Saidur Rahman over the election for the post of chairman of the management committee of the high school.

Dewan Saidur Rahman and Momtaz Begum were the candidates fighting for the post of chairman in the management committee election of the school, scheduled to be held yesterday.

After 1pm, supporters from both sides started gathering at the school premises.

Around 3pm, BCL activists beat up Mohiuddin Manzu and Mizanur Rahman -- two elected guardian representatives--in presence of police and magistrate.

Later, police rescued them and took them to a room of the school. Following the incident, the returning officer of the election postponed the election fearing deterioration of law and order.

To fend off untoward incident, police and members of Rapid Action Battalion rushed to the spot.

When asked, MP Momtaz said she was unaware about the incident as she was not present at the spot.
