Women have the potential to free Bangladesh from any challenges, and their contributions will create a lasting legacy, said speakers at an event yesterday.

They made these remarks during the 8th National Conference of the Bikoshito Nari Network, organised by The Hunger Project at the Institute of Diploma Engineers Bangladesh in the capital.

Speaking at the event, which saw hundreds of women in attendance, Badiul Alam, the country director of The Hunger Project, said, "You (Women) possess the power to liberate Bangladesh from any obstacle. Your contributions will leave a lasting mark in the nation's history."

"You are shaping a new future for yourselves, one that serves as a source of inspiration for everyone, particularly women in local communities," he added.

Attending the programme, political scientist  Prof Rounaq Jahan encouraged the women attendees for their work in empowering other women.

She said violence against women remains a significant problem in Bangladesh, and to address it effectively, unity among women, especially at the grassroots, is essential.

Rights Activist Hameeda Hossain said, "To uphold human rights, we navigate many difficult paths and confront numerous obstacles, often relying on legal aid centres for assistance. In times of such challenges, these centres can serve as a vital link with individuals at the grassroots."

While reading the written manifesto of the council, Anju Anwara Moyna of Tangail Bikoshito Nari Network  pledged to execute several initiatives aimed at expediting the drive for public awareness (regarding women and children's rights) and enhancing women's leadership at the grassroots.

These initiatives include mobilising a larger number of women and building a strong women's network as a foundation for ensuring their rights.

It also read, "We will unite against violence towards women, including child marriage and domestic abuse. Our objectives include ending hunger and poverty, supporting mothers and children, and combating discrimination and extremism. We recognise women's vital role in environmental protection and seek to raise awareness while providing training in this area."

Nasima Akter Joly, general secretary of Bikoshito Nari Network, and entrepreneur Tajima Hossain Majumder also spoke at the programme.

The event was chaired by president of the organisation Rashida Akhter.
