Verdict on Badiul’s appeal early June

Information Commission will announce its verdict in early June on Shushashoner Jonno Nagorik Secretary Badiul Alam Majumdar's appeal against a government agency's denial of providing information.

The commission held a virtual hearing yesterday, after Cabinet Division refused to provide information about who proposed whose names before the search committee, which was formed to recommend people for the roles of chief election commissioner and election commissioner to the president.

After the hearing, the commission said it would announce its verdict on June 6 or 7, Badiul said.

Badiul sought information from Cabinet Division on February 16, in line with the Right to Information Act 2009. The designated official of the division could not provide the information and said that the division has no jurisdiction to provide such information, he added.

Badiul appealed against the decision and the appellate official did not respond. After that, he lodged a complaint with Information Commission on April 11.

At yesterday's hearing, in presence of Chief Information Commissioner Martuza Ahmed, Badiul presented his arguments, and the Cabinet Division official said if they provide the information, it could "tarnish the image of many, and there might be security issues for them".
