If no other party submits nomination papers for the presidential candidate by 4:00pm today, ruling Awami League's nominee Mohammed Shahabuddin is all set to become Bangladesh's next president.

Shahabuddin Chuppu, as he is widely known, is a member of AL's advisory committee and was the chairman of AL's publicity and publication sub-committee.

He is also a former ACC commissioner, a retired district and sessions Judge, and a freedom fighter.

He completed his master of science degree from Rajshahi University in 1974 and then obtained an LLB Degree from the same institution in 1975.

Born in Pabna in 1949, Shahabuddin started his career in judicial service in 1983 and was a district judge till 2006. He also discharged duties as chairman of labour court in 2006, lawyer of the Supreme Court during 2008-2011 and ACC commissioner from March 2011 to March 2016.

He performed various crucial duties, including as a member of a judicial inquiry committee, chairman of the judicial inquiry commission and several other such roles.

Mohammed Shahabuddin visited various countries of the world and participated in many local and international seminars, symposia, workshops and conferences on case management and court management organised by the Judicial Training Academy.

He was the representative of Bangladesh at the International Seminar in Beijing, organized by Commonwealth on Prevailing Law in Bangladesh. He also worked as a journalist of Daily BanglarBani from 1980 to 1982.

He is also engaged in various social, educational and cultural organisations of the country.
