Shishu Hospital: Man beaten to death over theft allegation

A man was beaten to death allegedly by some Ansar men on suspicion of being a thief at the Shishu Hospital in the capital yesterday afternoon.

Md Mamun, 32, of Pallabi area, was a tea stall owner, said his brother Masud Rana.

He said Mamun along with his wife, daughter, and mother went to the Shyamoli area around 11:30am.

"In the afternoon, Mamun sent his family home on a bus and went to the [Shishu] hospital area. Outside the hospital, he saw his neighbour whose daughter was being treated there. As the neighbour and he tried to enter the hospital, an altercation broke out with the Ansar members present there," he claimed.

"At one stage, my brother assaulted an Ansar man. Later, the Ansar member shouted thief and they along with some ambulance drivers beat him to death," Masud alleged.

Abdul Hakim, public relations officer of the hospital, however, said  they heard that a mob beat up Mamun as he was "stealing a bicycle" from  the hospital premises.

Quoting witnesses, Sub-Inspector Masudur Rahim of Sher-e-Bangla Nagar  Police Station said Mamun was beaten to death on suspicion that he was a  thief.

Police said they are investigating the incident.

The body was sent to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College morgue for an autopsy.

Seeing a neighbour, Nuruzzaman, whose daughter was being treated at the hospital, he tried to enter the premises to meet him when an altercation broke out with the Ansar members present there," he claimed.
