Lavrov leaves message of tribute during visit to Bangabandhu Memorial Museum

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov visited the Bangabandhu Memorial Museum at Dhanmondi 32 this morning before flying off to India for the G20 Summit.

During his visit, he left a message paying tribute to Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in the visitors' book of the museum.

"Glad to visit the memorial museum of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the father of Bangladesh. We remember his key role as a fighter for independence of his nation.

"The Soviet Union provided support to his fight and was one of the first countries to recognize Bangladesh. We cherish our common history and foundation of friendly mutually beneficial relation between our countries established by Sheikh Mujibur Rahman," the Russian foreign minister wrote.

Lavrov arrived in Dhaka around 6:00pm yesterday after attending the East Asia Summit in Jakarta and held a bilateral meeting with Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen. He and Momen then held a press briefing.

This is the first time a Russian foreign minister is visiting Bangladesh.
