Human Dev Index: Bangladesh ranks 129th among 191 countries

Bangladesh ranked 129th among 191 countries in this year's Human Development Index, according to Human Development Report 2021-22 released by the UNDP yesterday.

In the previous report published in 2020, Bangladesh ranked 133 out of 189 countries.

Nazneen Ahmed, country economist at the UNDP Bangladesh, said, "Bangladesh's progress is promising. Because, according to this report, there has been a decline in human development globally. The world is currently in the same position it was in 2016 in terms of human development. This is mainly because of the Covid pandemic.

"Bangladesh has moved forward in that aspect. A major reason behind Bangladesh's progress is the increase in national income... But inequality is growing in Bangladesh and if it continues, it will be impossible to sustain this progress."

As per the report, Bangladesh was ranked 135th out of 185 countries in the world in 2019.

In 2018, Bangladesh was ranked 136th in the Global Human Development Index.

According to this year's report, the human development situation in Bangladesh is moderate.

Among South Asian countries, the Maldives ranks 90th, Bhutan 127th, India 131st,  Nepal 143rd, Pakistan 161st and Afghanistan 180th.

Switzerland, Norway and Iceland have retained the top spot in the index. On the other hand, South Sudan, Chad and Niger are at the bottom.

The Index was created by analysing public health, education, and income data to highlight people's progress.
