Govt taking steps to set up human tissue bank: PM

The government has taken an initiative to set up a complete human tissue bank, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina told the parliament today.

In reply to Awami League MP Anwar Hossain Khan from Laxmipur-1, the premier said a project titled "Institute of Tissue Banking and Biomaterial Research Service and Modernization and Expansion of Research Facilities" was approved on July 28. 

In the scripted answer, the PM said once the project is implemented, the activities related to the tissue banking will be expanded and burn patients and other crippled patients suffering from chronic diseases, will get benefits from it.

Hasina, also leader of the House, said the project is worth Tk 173.80 crore and the implementation time is from July 2021 to 2025.

She also said Bangladesh Atomic Energy under the supervision of the science and technology ministry will implement the project.

Hasina said the tissue banking post research service was first started in 1997 at Atomic Energy Research Institute at Savar with technological assistance of International Atomic Energy Agency.
