A family with multiple disabled persons in the municipality area of Phulbari upazila in Dinajpur got a brick-built house after a philanthropist of Dhaka came forward to help them following a Facebook post depicting their inhuman living conditions for the shortage of places.

The two-room brick-made house was built in PurbaKatabari area of Phulbari Municipality, on a piece of land of Kanai Saha, a disabled person of the family.

This new house was handed over to the family on Saturday.

Saila Sabrin, managing director of PPS Plastic Pipe Industry Limited of Gazipur, also a philanthropist, handed over the house to the family members as chief guest on Saturday. Phulbari Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Reaz Uddin, and Mahmud Alam Liton, mayor of Phulbari municipality, were also present there.

UNO Reaz Uddin said the government built at least eight lakh houses across the country and distributed those among the distressed people marking the birth centenary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. It is always not possible for the government alone to ensure housing for all. Things will be easier if the philanthropists across the country come forward.

Sabrina, in her speech, said she felt peace after handing over the gift.

Mehedi Hasan Ujjal, a local journalist of Phulbari upazila, updated a status on Facebook describing the inhuman living condition of the family with four disabled persons on November 5 last year.

They were living in a run-down house.

The Facebook post attracted the attention of the philanthropist, who visited the family in January this year and pledged to give them a house as a gift.

Construction of the house was completed recently.

All the four members, including a woman, are either mentally and physically challenged, said the locals.

She also gave the family Tk 1 lakh as monetary assistance.

Kanai Saha, a physically challenged member of the family, said that the house they had been staying in for years was not in a livable condition.
