Former ambassador to Malaysia M Khairuzzaman will be brought back to Bangladesh soon, said Shahriar Alam, state minister for foreign affairs, this afternoon.

He said this in response to a question while talking to the media.

"Khairuzzaman is at a deportation centre in Malaysia right now. As far as I understand, there is an opportunity to interrogate him again and investigate the case against him," the state minister said.

"We are trying to bring him back as soon as possible," he added.

Malaysia's interior ministry had written a letter announcing the breach of an immigration law by Khairuzzaman for which he was arrested, the state minister said.

However, the state minister didn't know which law was broken.

In response to another question, Shahriar Alam said that he does not know if Khairuzzaman had a UN refugee card.

"We hope to be able to bring him back soon. The home ministry and the law ministry will then jointly decide at what stage of the case he will be questioned again or how the case will be renewed," he added.

Saying that it will be checked if Khairuzzaman really has a UN refugee card, the state minister said, "the activities of the UN reflect the laws of the member states."
