DU sexual harassment: Committee suggests relieving teacher of duties

The academic committee of Dhaka University's music department has recommended removing Assistant Professor Anamul Haque from all academic activities after being accused of sexually harassing a female student.

The decision came in a meeting presided over by Prof Debproshad Dawn, the department's chairperson, on Wednesday, in presence of members of the committee.

The committee made the recommendation based on evidence provided by the victim, including a call recording in which he was heard making indecent proposals to the student.

"Most of the members have opined in favour of relieving Anamul from all academic activities of the department, as we got proof of the allegation," said Prof Dawn.

Any further decision in this regard will come from the university's higher authorities.

Terming the allegation brought against Anamul as serious, DU Pro-vice Chancellor (Academic) Prof ASM Maksud Kamal said, "We will take stern action as per university rules. Most of the time, we take departmental action through syndicate meetings."

Anamul declined to make any comment on the issue when this correspondent reached him over phone.
