Case against DNCC mayor dismissed

A Dhaka tribunal yesterday dismissed a case under the Digital Security Act, hours after filed against Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Atiqul Islam.

Judge Mohammad Ash Sams Joglul Hossain of Dhaka Cyber Tribunal summarily dismissed the case, Shamim Al Mamun, bench assistant of the tribunal, told The Daily Star.

In his order, the judge said there was no cogent ground to take cognisance of the charges.

Earlier in the day, Abdur Rahim, a resident of the capital's Tejgaon area, filed the case with the tribunal against Mayor Atiqul under sections 25 and 29 under the DSA.

The judge then recorded the complainant's statements.

According to the case, Mayor Atiqul forcibly possessed the complainant's property and intentionally published various offensive, false, intimidating, and defamatory information about him [complainant] and his family through various media using the digital devices.

A legal notice was sent to the mayor on September 12, but he did not respond, the case statement said.
