An abandoned cargo vessel has washed ashore at St Martin's Island in Teknaf, Cox's Bazar today.

The vessel which was sighted this morning got stuck near the coral-stones of Chhera Dwip, a part of St Martin's Island.

Locals and members of Coast Guard told our local correspondent that the unmanned container cargo ship was washed ashore because of the effects of cyclone Sitrang and the tidal current. The top portion of the ship has a few open areas. Numerous containers and other items are present there.

St Martin's Union Parishad member Nazir Ahmed said, "Locals are crowding to see the ship. MR 3322 and SC4562B is written on the ship, but we could not determine where the ship came from. The content of some rooms are unknown as they are locked."

Mujibur Rahman, chairman of St Martin's Union Parishad, said, "When the locals told me about the container ship, I informed the police administration and the upazila administration about the situation. I'm not able to say much more at this time."

Coast Guard's Teknaf Station Commander Lt Ashik Ahmed said on information a coast guard team went there. The cargo ship is 90 meters in length with some goods inside.

A search will be conducted on the cargo vessel after the cyclone, the coast guard official said.
