Fifty-three-year-old Monetzar Rahman of Bogura returned home today after a life-saving liver transplant at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU).

Monetzar's sister Shamima Akter, 43, donated 60 percent of her liver last month to save her brother while the cost of surgery was borne by the Prime Minister's Relief and Welfare Fund.

The Department of Hepatobiliary, Pancreatic and Liver Transplant Surgery of BSMMU confirmed the information today morning.

Monetzar Rahman was admitted to BSMMU a few months ago. After his diagnosis, doctors decided that a liver transplant was the only way to cure him. Later, they found his sister to be the ideal donor for him.

BSMMU surgeons performed the 15-hour-long complex surgery on January 1 supported by the Asian Institute of Gastroenterology and surgeons from India.

This is one of the only seven liver transplant surgeries performed in this country so far.

Around 60 percent of the liver transplanted to Monetzar was taken from Shamima. The liver donor will gradually regenerate the liver and earlier last month donor Shamima was sent home.
