Satkhira municipal mayor suspended over Tk 3cr corruption

Satkhira Municipality Mayor Tazkin Ahmed Chisty has been suspended for irregularities and corruption of Tk 3 crore, according to a letter from the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives.

Tazkin waived several bills including utilities, VAT, revenue, leasing and trade license bills. He did not follow the existing rules and regulations properly during the waivers, said the letter, reports our Satkhira correspondent.

As these allegations were proved in the investigation, he was suspended, it stated.

Firoz Ahmed, panel mayor of Satkhira municipality said 10 councillors complained to the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives bringing 10 specific allegations against the mayor.

After conducting several phases of investigations, the authority suspended the mayor, he added.

Tazkin is a member of Satkhira BNP's convening committee.

Mohammad Humayun Kabir, deputy commissioner of Satkhira said he heard about the incident.

"I am yet to get any official order in this regard", he added.
