Newly elected Cumilla Mayor Rifat sworn in

The newly elected Mayor of Cumilla City Corporation, Arfanul Haque Rifat, has been sworn in today (July 5, 2022).

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina administered the oath virtually to Mayor Rifat at Osmani Memorial Auditorium in Dhaka this morning, our Cumilla correspondent reports.

After this, Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Tajul Islam administered oath to 27 elected general councillors and nine reserved seat councillors of Cumilla City Corporation.

The PM later spoke at the programme.

She said that the Cumilla City Corporation election was a highly competitive one and termed it as an example in the history of elections. She also said that Awami League has established the culture of voting.

PM said, "Cumilla is the gateway between Dhaka and Chattogram. At an Ecnec meeting, already a project worth Tk 1,538 crore has been approved for infrastructure development of Cumilla City Corporation."

On June 15, Awami League candidate Arfanul Haque Rifat won the mayoral election of the city corporation. He got 50,310 votes in the election held through EVMs.
