Gazipur City Corporation's newly elected Mayor Zaida Khatun today said she would repay the debt of Gazipur people by working for them, and that she wants to complete the works that her son started when he was mayor.

Zaida said this during a briefing at her residence in the city's Chhoydana area around 4:30am today, our Gazipur correspondent reports.

"Congratulations to everyone. Congratulations to Sheikh Hasina too. I thank her. The voting was held in a fair manner. I have received my vote count and I am all the more thankful for that."

She also said she would dedicate her victory to the people of Gazipur and to the prime minister.

When asked if she would seek Awami League candidate Azmat Ullah's advice for the city's development, she said, "If necessary, I will work with him and work with everyone's advice. I can't do the work alone. I will work with everyone's advice and cooperation."

Zaida's son and former GCC mayor Zahangir Alam was present at the briefing.

He said, "My mother has been elected mayor. I will complete all the works in the city with my mother. We will try to complete all works of the city with the assistance of the prime minister."

He also said, "Azmat Ullah Khan [Awami League's nominee for the mayoral post] is our elder brother. I will try to make Gazipur a beautiful modern city on the advice of all the candidates, including him [Azmat Ullah], who have contested the election, and the leaders and activists who are politically established locally."

Zahangir thanked the Election Commission, the government and the administration for holding a free and fair election in the city.

He said, "With the cooperation of everyone, we have witnessed the voting [being conducted] beautifully in Gazipur and received the voting result correctly."

"We want overall cooperation in any work to build this city and its future," he added.
