The Election Commission has decided that electronic voting machines (EVMs) will be used in no more than 150 constituencies in the next general election.

Ashok Kumar Debnath, additional secretary to the Election Commission, said this to reporters after a meeting at the Election Commission.

Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Habibul Awal and all election commissioners were present during the meeting.

"At the moment, we have the capacity to use EVMs in 70-75 seats," Ashok told reporters adding that the commission has a total of 1.5 lakh EVMs and they would buy more EVMs, if necessary.

The additional secretary said they have not yet chosen the constituency where EVMs will be used and they will give notifications when the schedule is fixed.

Asked about the decision of using EVMs despite opposition from various political parties, Ashok Debnath said, "The decision has been taken after taking the advice of all political parties into consideration."
