B’baria-2 by-polls: Symbols of 2 key candidates changed

Two days after their allotment, the election symbols of two key candidates in the upcoming by-election to the Brahmanbaria-2 have been changed.

Expelled BNP leader Ukil Abdus Sattar Bhuiyan was allotted "a bunch of bananas' while advocate Ziaul Haque Mridha, a former Jatiya Party lawmaker who was also expelled from his party, got "apple" today, reports our local correspondent.

Earlier, the duo was given "green coconut" and "lion" respectively.

District Election Officer Zillur Rahman, who is also the assistant returning officer of the February 1 by-polls, confirmed the development to The Daily Star.

"The symbols -- 'green coconut' and 'lion' allotted to Ukil Abdus Sattar Bhuiyan and advocate Ziaul Haque Mridha respectively are election symbols of two registered political parties," said Zillur.

"'Green coconut' is the election symbol of a Bangladesh Congress, which was registered as a political party on May 9, 2019, and 'lion' is the symbol of Jatiyatabadi Gonotantrik Andolon, which was registered on January 30, 2019. For this reason, the symbols have been changed," he said.
