Up to 40% voter turnout likely in Rajshahi, Sylhet: EC Rashida

Voter turnout could reach up to 40 percent each in the Rajshahi and Sylhet city corporation elections, Election Commissioner Rashida Sultana said today.

"It is difficult to say the accurate percentage of voter turnout right now. We think it could reach as much as 40 percent. It's just an assumption," she told reporters at the Election Commission office.

Voters of both Sylhet and Rajshahi city corporation have been going to the voting centres with great enthusiasm amid a festive atmosphere, the commissioner said.

About 20 percent voting was cast in four hours in each of the two city corporation elections, Rashida said around 12:30pm.

"From what we've been seeing since morning, the overall situation is good," she said.

"Even though it was raining, the casting of votes was not stopped. Voter turnout is still good. There is no chaos inside the centres. We don't have any information about irregularities from anyone," she added.

Over the allegations of expelling candidates' agents, she said, "We do not have information about the agents being expelled. If we receive a complaint, we will definitely take action."
