Visiting US Assistant Secretary Donald Lu today said a tremendous progress has been made in reducing extrajudicial killings by Rab in Bangladesh.

"We had quite good discussion about the Rab. If you see the statement this week by the Human Rights Watch, they recognised and we recognised tremendous progresses in the area of reducing extra judicial killings by the Rab," he said.

The US assistant secretary was talking to reporters after a meeting with Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen at the ministry in Dhaka.

"This is amazing work. It shows the Rab is able to carry out important counterterrorism and law enforcement function while respecting human rights," he said.

"I am here to strengthen the friendship with Bangladesh when the world is struggling to establish peace and justice," Lu said.

"We had very honest and open discussions with the Bangladesh foreign minister and secretary. We have expressed our commitment to democracy and human rights. We will speak when we see problems and offer suggestions. We will stand up for freedom of speech, freedom of expression," he also said.
