Padma Bridge will be named after the mighty river after all, not after anyone, Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader said today.

The minister said this after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina rejected the Bridge Division's proposal to name the long-cherished bridge after her.

"We provided two summaries (for PM). She signed one, setting the inauguration date of the Padma Bridge on June 25. But she did not sign the other summary, regarding naming of the bridge," Quader told reporters.

The minister said that prime minister told them, the name of Padma Bridge would be after the river. "I (PM) don't want anyone's name here," Quader quoted Hasina as saying.

Padma Bridge would not be named after anyone from the Bangabandhu family, Quader said.

He was briefing reporters at the entrance of Gono Bhaban after meeting with the prime minister. Bridge Division's Secretary Monjur Hossain accompanied Quader.
