Woman held over death of her daughter in N’ganj

Police today detained a woman for allegedly strangling her two-and-half-year-old daughter to death in Narayanganj Sadar upazila.

The incident happened around 11:00am today (July 4, 2022) when the child, Jannatul, was crying and her mother, Sharmin Begum (19), seemingly enraged over this, strangled her, leaving the child unconscious, reports our Narayanganj correspondent quoting police.

As Jannatul remained unconscious till noon, she was rushed to Narayanganj General Hospital where on duty doctor declared her dead.

Due to the unnatural way the child died, hospital authorities kept the body at their morgue and informed law enforcers.

Confirming the matter, Humayun Kabir, a sub-inspector of Fatullah Police Station, told The Daily Star that poverty might be the motive behind the murder.

"Sharmin's husband left her soon after Jannatul was born and never returned. She had since then been living at her father's house in Sadar upazila. Sharmin's father Nur Islam is a day labourer in Madhyansingpur area of the upazila," SI Humayun Kabir said.

"They have been living amid financial constraints and Sharmin faced difficulties rearing her daughter, and was frustrated with how things turned out to be. It is likely she was compelled to strangle her daughter to death out of frustration," the police official also said.

Filing of a case in this connection is underway, the SI added.
