‘We don’t want to be in news because of bad deeds’

Inspector General of Police Benazir Ahmed today warned that corrupt activities by any force member would not be tolerated.

"We don't want to be in news because of bad deeds," he said.

Benazir was speaking at a programme at Rajarbagh Police Lines, organised on the second day of Police Week 2022, to award various units for their success in recovering drugs, arms and smuggled goods in 2020 and 2021.

He also said Bangladesh Police is determined to serve the people.

"…Policing is not just a job; it is a service. We want police to serve the people of the country without discrimination," he said.

The police chief further said they were constantly working to improve the quality of the force.

The most meritorious are being selected centrally with maximum transparency for promotions while rules regarding appointment of constables, sub-inspectors and sergeants have been amended after 40 years, he added.

Referring to the prime minister's declaration of zero tolerance against militancy and drugs, the IGP said they are implementing the policy.

Illegal weapons must be completely eradicated from Bangladesh. People have to come forward to end drug abuse, he said.

Benazir highlighted roles of police during the pandemic and said 106 policemen sacrificed their lives while 27,000 others fell sick while playing their role to fight pandemic.
