The High Court today stayed for six months the trial proceedings of a criminal case that Tureen Afroz, a former prosecutor at the International Crimes Tribunal, filed against her brother for issuing death threats and demeaning her character.

The court also issued a rule asking the state and Tureen Afroz to explain why the case proceedings against her brother Shahnawaz Ahmed Shishir should not be scrapped.

The HC bench of Justice Md Salim and Justice Md Riaz Uddin Khan issued the order and rule following a petition filed by Shahnawaz, who is now on bail, seeking to quash the trial proceedings.

Shahnawaz's lawyers Md Monzur Rabbi and M Anisuzzaman told reporters that Tureen and Shahnawaz lodged two separate general diaries (GDs) with Uttara West Model Police Station on September 14, 2019, against each other over their family properties.

The police accepted the GD filed by Tureen Afroz and recorded it as a criminal case against Shahnawaz, but refused to accept Shahnawaz's GD, which is malafide, they said, adding that a Dhaka court framed charges against Shahnawaz in the case on October 31, 2021.
