Trader dies after gang assaults him over extortion payment

A trader died after a local gang attacked him for not paying the money they demanded as extortion in Dhaka's Mirpur area last night, his family said.

The deceased was identified as Omar Faruk, a tyre trader.

The incident took place around 10:00pm in front of his house at Mirpur-1.

The teen group have long been demanding Tk 10 lakh as extortion from him. As he refused to pay the money, a group of 10 persons including teenage boys last night beat him up, said a relative of the victim.

After being attacked, Faruk felt chest pain. He was rushed to a nearby hospital where doctors declared him dead, he said.

Mashiur Rahman, a sub-inspector of Shah Ali Police Station, said they recovered the body from the hospital after learning of allegations that he was assaulted.

The body was sent to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy.
