The BNP men threw bombs at police from the second floor of the BNP's Nayapaltan party office during the clash that broke out in the afternoon, said a senior DMP official.

"When we are attacked, when people's lives are in danger, common people are attacked, we are forced to conduct operations. They threw bombs at police from the second floor of their office building," said Biplob Kumar Sarker, joint commissioner (operations) of DMP.

"Many bombs were stored there. We recovered them. We believe this attack was carried out to damage property, kill and attack law enforcers," he added.

Police dealt with the overall situation with patience. "We were repeatedly provoked, but we did not provoke anyone," he said.

Replying to a query about the number of arrestees following the clash, which left one dead and at least 30 others injured, he said police detained so many people that officials could not count immediately.

"We have arrested many criminals as well as those who instigated violence," he also said while briefing reporters at Nayapaltan.

Replying to a query on the BNP's allegation that Police carried bombs in bags to plant those in the BNP office, the official said, "It is not important who made what complaint. The operation was done in front of everyone. We recovered bombs and sticks in front of everyone."

He also said, "Many of our members were injured by bombs and bricks. You can visit the Central Police Hospital."
