Teacher gets life term for raping 11-year-old student in Dhaka

A Dhaka tribunal today sentenced a house-tutor to life term imprisonment for raping his 11-year-old student in Dhaka's Sabujbagh area in May 2017.

Judge AM Zulfikar Hayat of Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-3 of Dhaka handed down the sentence in presence of the convict, Raju Ahmed, at the courtroom.+

The tribunal also fined him Tk one lakh, in default of which he will have to serve six more months in jail.

In his judgment, the judge said the accused should have to be sentenced death penalty for his offence. But the tribunal decided to give him life in jail as the baby boy, who was born following the rape, would be deprived of his love and affection.

The boy will be raised with the name of the victim and the convict as his parents, the court said

The custody in which the convict has been served would be deducted from his sentence.

The state will bear all the expenses of the baby boy, who is now in Sonamoni Nibash in Azimpur, until he turns 21 years old, the judge added.

According to case statement, Raju Ahmed (30) of Wahab Colony at Sabujbagh was the home-tutor of the girl. The convict accused on May 12 of 2017 raped the victim. Later the victim gave birth to a baby boy.

Following the incident, the victim's mother filed a case against the accused with Sabujbagh Police Station.

After an investigation, Sabujbagh Police submitted a charge sheet against the lone accused on May 7 of 2018.
