Sons beat up mother, physically challenged sister over occupying land

An ill-fated septuagenarian mother and her physically and mentally challenged daughter were beaten up and driven out of home by her three land-hungry sons allegedly for occupying 1.33 acres of land.

Elderly mother Jamela Bewa with her daughter Sabina Khatun has taken shelter at the house of her another daughter Rahima Khatun.

The incident took place at Dakshin Gobdha Bhitarkuti village of Durgapur union under Aditmari upazila in Lalmonirhat.

After the incident on September 2, Jamela Bewa with her challenged daughter went the house on Monday (September 6) morning, they were barred from entering the house again, alleged Jamela Bewa.

Jamela Bewa said that while her husband Jasim Uddin was alive, he divided the land among his six sons and five daughters.

At that time, he gave 54 decimals land to Sabina Khatun and 79 decimals land to her.

After the death of her husband, her three sons-- Iman Ali, Saiful Islam and Saidul Islam--used to cultivate their lands and gave them share of the crops. With this crop, Jamela Bewa lived separately with her challenged daughter. As her three sons suddenly stopped giving the share of crops, she wanted the land back in her possession.

At this, the trio got enraged and stabbed their mother Jamela Bewa on July 30.

The eldest son Iman Ali was arrested in a case filed at the police station in connection with the incident. After being released on bail, Iman Ali and others started torturing their mother and the disabled sister again.

Jamela Bewa said that when she went on her land on September 2, they got angry and beat her up and drove her and Sabina out of the home. 'I have lodged a written complaint with the police. My disabled daughter and I are now suffering from insecurity, ' she said.

Shafiqul Islam, the youngest son of Jamela Bewa, said that the land of their elderly mother and disabled sister was in the possession of their three elder brothers. As they are anti-social and quarrelsome in nature, nothing can be said against them. The police are investigating and they will take legal action, he said.

Contacted the eldest son Iman Ali over his mobile said that he would give reply through the legal means. He expressed unwillingness to reply to the queries from the journalists.

Aditmari Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Saiful Islam said a case was lodged earlier in the same incident. After investigating the incidents before and after the case, the police will prepare a charge sheet and submit it to the court soon.
