Six Rajshahi cops closed for ‘violating service discipline’

RMP sources say the six were suspended over extortion allegations

Six police personnel, including two officers of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police (RMP), were closed last night 'for violating service discipline'.

The officers are Assistant Traffic Sub-inspector Nasir Uddin, and Assistant Sub-inspector Selim Shahzada under BoaliaPolice Station, RMP's Additional Deputy Commissioner Golam RuhulKuddus said.

Four others are constables -- Shanker, Shah Alam, Sarwar, and Ripon Ali -- of the same police station, he said.

"They were suspended for violating service disciplines," he said, adding that RMP Commissioner Abu Kalam Siddique passed the order upon receiving a complaint.

They were closed to the police line with immediate effect, he said.

Sources in RMP, however, said the six police personnelwere suspended because they extorted two persons after taking them to Seroilpolice box in the morning despite finding nothing on their person after searching them.

At the police box, under threat of planting drugs on the duo and arresting them, they took around Tk one lakh from them through bKash, the sources said.

Getting released from the police box, the extortion victims informed the matter to one of their relatives in the police headquarters in Dhaka, the RMP sources said.

The names of the victims could not be ascertained immediately.

Later, the two personsalso submitted a complaint with the RMP commissioner.

The sources added that some members of police have been engaging in extortion at three police boxes at Seroil, Laxmipur, and Kashiadangafor years.

"They extort people often," a senior official said on condition of anonymity, adding that complaints against them brought hardly any result.
