Rohingya cleric beaten to death in Cox's Bazar Rohingya camp

A 45-year-old Islamic cleric was beaten to death at the Noyapara Rohingya camp in Teknaf, Cox's Bazar today.

The deceased was identified as Mohammad Shaker (45), a resident of Block C of the camp, reports our Cox's Bazar correspondent quoting police.

After killing him, miscreants dumped Shaker's body in a roadside ditch. Later, members of the Armed Police Battalion (APBN) recovered his body.

APBN arrested 10 people in connection with the murder.

Shaker had a general store in the camp and also worked as an informant for law enforcers stationed there, said Rohingya leaders and residents of the camp.

He had a fallout with a gang leader who was killed in a "gunfight" with law enforcers a few months back. A number of gang members in the camp were involved in killing Shaker, Rohingya leaders and residents said.

"Shaker was killed due to previous enmity. APBN members of Teknaf Model Police Station conducted a joint operation and arrested 10 Rohingyas after the incident," said 16 APBN Commander Md Tariqul Islam.

"The deceased's body has been sent to Cox's Bazar District Sadar Hospital for an autopsy.The 10 arrestees will be produced before the Teknaf Senior Judicial Magistrate today. A case is being filed regarding the matter," Teknaf Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Hafizur Rahman told The Daily Star.
