Retired schoolteacher Maya Rani Ghose was strangled to death at her Rajshahi city home by one of her former students -- apparently for her gold jewellery.

Police disclosed the information today after they arrested Milon Sheikh (40) and recovered victim's jewellery and mobile phone from his Boro Kuthi home.

"Milon is a former student of the victim. He went to the teacher's house yesterday morning with the excuse of finding a tenant for her room and made away with her jewellery after killing her," Nibaran Chandra Barman, officer-in-charge of Boalia Police Station, said.

Yesterday, police recovered the body of Maya (70), retired headmaster of Munnujan Government Primary School, from her room.

The OC said that the teacher used to live alone and was looking for tenants for part of her house. For this, he sought help from Milon and some others.

Milon went to the teacher's house several times and was driven by greed, seeing her ornaments, the OC said.

Around 10:00am yesterday, Milon went to her house again and said three girls would rent her room in exchange of a monthly rent of Tk 5,500.

The woman then talked about the possible tenants with one of her close relatives over the phone and went to bathroom. Upon return, she didn't find Milon. The culprit attacked her from behind and suffocated her. Later, he left with her gold ornaments, the OC said.

Milon hid the ornaments, wrapped in clothes, in a bucket at his house from where police recovered those, he added.
