Nine brokers jailed for deceiving, misleading patients at NITOR

A mobile court assisted by Rab today sentenced nine brokers to one month in jail each for harassing and deceiving patients at National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopedic Rehabilitation (NITOR) in Dhaka.

"When people come to this hospital for treatment, the brokers lure them and take them to different private and unauthorised hospitals, promising them good service," Palash Kumar Bosu, the executive magistrate who led the drive told The Daily Star.

Many patients are deceived by them. Failing to get quality service there, many of them are forced to return to NITOR, he said. Many patients also become victims of mistreatment at such unauthorised hospitals.

The executive magistrate said they conducted a two-hour drive in the evening on receiving complaints from at least four patients recently.

They were sentenced to one month in jail as the convicts admitted to their crime, he said.

NITOR Director Prof Abdul Gani Mollah said they assisted the mobile court's drive.
