Neighbours burn woman to death after son elopes with their daughter

The family members of a girl set a woman on fire after her son eloped with their daughter at Mymensingh city's Char Ishwardia area yesterday (June 28, 2022).

The victim, Laily Akter (38), wife of Abdur Rashid, succumbed to her injuries at Sheikh Hasina National Burn and Plastic Surgery Institute in Dhaka yesterday evening, reports our Mymensingh correspondent quoting police.

Quoting family sources and locals, Mohammad Shah Kamal Akanda, officer-in-charge of Kotwali Model Police Station said Sirajul Islam (20) had an affair with his neighbour Khuki (18), daughter of Kajol Khoka.

"As both the families did not accept their relationship, the boy eloped with the girl on June 26. Locals tried to resolve the issue through arbitration but failed," the OC said.

"At around 9am on Tuesday morning, the girl's mother Aysha Akter Kona (38) and her two sister-in-laws-- Nasreen Akter (36) and Asma Akter (38)--went to Sirajul's house and locked into an altercation with his mother Laily when the other members of the family were not present."

At one stage, they tied Laily's hands and feet with rope and set her on fire, leaving her critically injured, said the OC.

Hearing her screams, locals rushed to the spot, rescued her and took her to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital from where she was shifted to Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka for better treatment.

On-duty doctors declared her dead upon her arrival at the hospital, informed the OC.

Following the incident, the victim's husband Abdur Rashid filed a murder case with the Mymensingh's Kotwali Model Police Station last night accusing nine people.

Police have already arrested Asma and her husband Jahangir, he said, adding that they are interrogating the duo.

Drives are on to nab the other accused, he added.
