Narayanganj fire: Hashem Foods owner, 2 sons get bail

A Narayanganj court today granted bail to Hashem Foods and Beverage owner Abul Hashem and his two sons, who were arrested in connection with the deaths of 51 people in a fire at their factory in Narayanganj's Rupganj upazila on July 8.

Narayanganj District and Sessions Judge Anisur Rahman granted them bail after a hearing this afternoon, reports our local correspondent.

Earlier on July 14, Abul Hashem's two other sons Taosib Ibrahim and Tanzeem Ibrahim were granted bail by the Narayanganj Senior Judicial Magistrate's court.

"Defendant's lawyer sought bail for six people, including Abul Hashem and his two sons -- Hasib bin Hashem alias Sajeeb and Tareq Ibrahim but the court granted bail to three and send the rest to jail," Narayanganj Court Police Inspector Asaduzzaman told The Daily Star.

Eight people, including the owner of Hashem Foods factory in Narayanganj, were arrested on July 10 in a case filed over the devastating fire.

Now, Hashem and his four sons are out on bail while Sajeeb Group's Chief Operating Officer Shahan Shah Azad; Hashem Foods' Deputy General Manager Mamunur Rashid, its civil engineer-admin officer Salahuddin are behind bars.

Nazim Uddin, in-charge inspector of Bhulta Police Outpost under Rupganj Police Station, filed the case with the Rupganj Police Station alleging negligence. He named six people including Abul Hashem and accused several others in the case.
