Man on the run after 'burning wife to death' in Jashore

A woman was allegedly burnt to death by her husband at Arabpur area in Jashore last night.

The victim was identified as Shirina Begum (26), wife of Juwel Sardar, hailing from Mathpara of the district, reports our Benapole correspondent quoting Tazul Islam, officer-in-charge of Kotwali Police Station.

The victim's younger brother Sohel Rana claimed that Juwel Sardar has been torturing her sister for a long time for dowry.

"Juwel had an altercation with my sister for dowry last night. At one point, Juwel set fire on my sister by pouring petrol on her," he said.

"Locals rescued my sister hearing her screams," he added.

They immediately sent her to Jashore General Hospital where she was referred to the Burn Unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

On her way to DMCH, she succumbed to her injuries, the victim's brother said.

Sohel said that Juwel married another woman who he murdered as well.

Physician Ahmed Tarek Shams said, most of Shirina's body was burnt and she was referred to DMCH's Burn Unit in critical condition.

A case in this connection is underway.

OC Tazul Islam said the body was sent to Jashore General Hospital for autopsy.

The exact reason of the death can be known after getting the autopsy report, he added.
