Man robs brother with help of cops

4 including SI, constable held; Tk 42 lakh seized, some from Rajarbagh Police Lines

A man on Sunday robbed Tk 54 lakh from his own brother with the help of police officers. This heist took place in Dhaka's Dholaikhal area, and it came to the fore following the arrest of four people including two cops, on Monday.

Their arrest resulted in the recovery of Tk 41.87 lakh, a portion of which was found in Rajarbagh Police Lines barracks.

Drives are underway to recover the rest of the stolen money, law enforcers said.

The victim, Abul Kalam, filed a case over the incident with Shyampur Police Station on Monday.

According to the case details, Kalam entrusted his grandson Tanvir Hossain Nayan with Tk 54 lakh in a bag, instructing him to deposit it into his business partner's account in a bank at Motijheel.

On Nayan's journey by foot, he was confronted by two individuals near a hospital in Dholaikhal who picked him up in a microbus, took all the money along with his mobile phone, and abandoned him on a desolate road.

Soon after the case was filed, the Detective Branch's Wari division started a shadow investigation and arrested Delwar Hossain, 45, a sub-inspector of Gulshan Police Station.

The detectives later recovered Tk 12 lakh from Delwar's brother-in-law's house in Rajarbagh, said Shahidur Rahman, additional deputy commissioner of DB (Wari division).

Based on Delwar's information, the DB arrested constable Abu Sayem, 37, and recovered Tk 8.87 lakh from Mojo Canteen Barrack at Rajarbagh Police Lines. They then arrested Abdul Baten, 32, driver of the microbus, and seized Tk 9 lakh.

Finally, the detectives arrested the victim's brother, Mosharraf Hossain, 59, a money exchange trader, and recovered Tk 12 lakh, the ADC added.

Among them, Mosharraf and Baten confessed before a Dhaka court on Tuesday.

Mosharraf, during his court testimony, said he had an enmity with his younger brother Kalam, despite both of them residing in the same building at Shyampur.

He said he had a good rapport with SI Delwar, who used to live adjacent to their house. Mosharraf first shared his robbery plan with Delwar.

Mosharraf knew that his brother's business finances were often managed by his grandson Nayan. On the day of the incident, he contacted SI Delwar to inform him that Nayan would be heading to Janata Bank in Motijheel with some money, although he was unaware of the exact amount involved.

Subsequently, SI Delwar, along with constable Sayem, driver Baten, and another individual named Hanif, carried out the robbery.

Meanwhile, Baten said Hanif called him a day before the incident, saying SI Delwar would carry out a raid and needed a vehicle. He said SI Delwar provided him with Tk 50,000 for this.
