Man dies after being hit with gas cylinder

A man was killed yesterday after a gas cylinder hit him at a shipbreaking yard in Sitakunda, Chattogram.

Nazim Uddin, 40, was critically injured when the heavy cylinder, which turned into a deadly projectile, hit him around 10:00am and was pronounced dead at a hospital soon afterwards, said Abul Kalam Azad, officer-in-charge of Sitakunda Police Station.

A resident of Boro Kumira in Sitakunda, he was a trader of goods salvaged from scrapped ships, Azad added.

He was at Mother Steel Shipyard in the area looking for goods to buy when the incident happened, the OC said, adding that a case about the unnatural death was recorded at the police station.

Abdullah Al Sakib Mubarrat, deputy inspector general of the Directorate for Inspection of Factory and Establishment, said the directorate was informed of the incident.

Working conditions in shipbreaking yards of the country have long been a cause for concern at home and abroad.
