Lawyer arrested over attempted rape of university student: Rab

Members of the Rapid Action Battalion have arrested a lawyer in a case filed over the attempted rape of a female university student in Gopalganj.

A Rab-3 team conducted a joint operation in Dhaka's New Market area yesterday afternoon and arrested Md Alamgir Hossain 45, said Lt Col Mostaq Ahmed, Rab-6 commanding officer, during a press briefing, reports our Khulna correspondent.

The accused had been absconding since the incident, said the Rab CO.

Alamgir, who practises at the Gopalganj District Court, is also the director of Tha In Chai Restaurant and Party Centre in the district.

Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Science and Technology University (BSMRSTU) Deputy Registrar Md Morad Hossain filed a case against the lawyer with Gopalganj Police Station on February 10.

According to the deputy registrar, Alamgir offered the victim a job to tutor his children. She accepted it and went to his place on the evening of February 10.

Though Alamgir said his children were at home, only he was present and attempted to rape her.

When she started screaming, the neighbours rescued her and Alamgir fled the scene, said Morad Hossain.
