A student of Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (KUET) was shown arrested in a case filed under the Digital Security Act.

The arrestee Zahidul Rahman (22), who hails from Bhola's Tajmuddin, is a second-year student of the CSE department of KUET, reports our local correspondent.

KUET's Security Officer Sadeque Hossain Pramanik filed the case against two persons including Zahidul at Khanjahan Ali Police Station in Khulna city last night (September 12, 2022), bringing allegations that the two spread provocative speeches through Telegram app.

The other accused is Rezwan Sam (21), a resident of Borhanuddin Mushir Hat village in Bhola.

Khanjahan Ali Police Station's Officer-in-Charge Md Kamal Hossain Khan told The Daily Star, "The security guards and angry students caught Zahidul and handed him over to the university authorities. The authorities took him to Khulna Medical College Hospital in an ambulance and admitted him. We showed him arrested at the hospital."

However, KUET's security officer Sadeque claimed, "Zahidur and two other students of BRAC University and Gopalganj University used to spread provocative speeches through Telegram apps. When the matter came to light, the agitated students detained him with a laptop and mobile phone from room number 117 of MA Rashid Hall around 9:00 pm on Sunday."

"Later, KUET officials, including the provost of the hall, came to the spot and handed him over to the police," he said.

Hamidul Islam, provost of Dr MA Rashid Hall said, "Some anti-state messages and books on Khilafat type were found with the accused student. Legal action has been taken against him and the other student as their conversations related to different groups are suspicious."

When asked whether Zahidul was beaten up on the campus, the hall provost denied it.
