A Dhaka court today placed Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Mohammad Shafiqur Rahman on a fresh three-day remand in connection with a militancy case filed with Jatrabari Police Station under the Anti-Terrorism Act.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Syed Mostafa Reza Nur passed the order after Md Abul Bashar, an inspector of the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, also the investigation officer of the case, produced Shafiqur before it on completion of his seven-day remand in the case.

While seeking another eight day fresh remand, the CTTC official said Shafiqur Rahman was both directly and indirectly involved in assisting members of banned militant outfit Ansar al Islam.

The Jamaat ameer gave important information about the activities of militants but avoided some questions and as such he needs to be remanded to gather more information about the incident, the IO added.

Defence, however, submitted a petition seeking bail along with cancellation of the remand prayer on grounds that their client's name was not included in the first information report (FIR) of the case.

Upon hearing both sides, the magistrate dismissed the defence pleas and placed him on a fresh remand.

A team of CTTC arrested Shafiqur Rahman from his Bashundhara house on December 13.
