HC releases full verdict of introducing biometric system in police stations, prisons

The High Court has issued three directives on the home ministry for introducing biometric data management system in all police stations and prisons across the country to prevent wrongful arrest and detention of people.

The directives came today (July 5, 2022) in a full text of a landmark verdict delivered by the High Court on September 9 last year.

The home secretary has been ordered to introduce biometric system including finger prints, palm prints and iris scanning in addition to existing crime data management system in all police stations, the HC said in the six-page full text judgement.

Earlier on September 9 last year, the HC bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim (now a judge of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court) and Justice Md Mostafizur Rahman delivered a short verdict on this issue following a writ petition filed by one Zahir Uddin from Noakhali's Basurhat area.

The petition was filed challenging the legality of a Dhaka court order that issued the arrest warrant against Zahir in the case filed with Khilgaon Police Station in Dhaka in 2013.
