Fish worth Tk 10 lakh poisoned over enmity

Miscreants poisoned fish to death in a pond over previous enmity in Ghatail upazila of Tangail.

The affected fish farmer has incurred a loss of about Tk 10 lakh following the incident.

Fish farmer Iqbal Hossain of Khilpara village said he has cultivated different fish, including carps, in a pond on 73 decimals of land after taking it lease from a local man at a cost of Tk 1 lakh.

On Monday early morning, when he went to visit the fish farm after the Fajr prayers as usual he found the dead fish floating on the water.

Hearing his scream, neighbors rushed to spot and found the dead fish.

They said that criminals may pour poison on the pond at some point at the night due to enmity. They also demanded exemplary punishment of the culprits.

Being informed, a team from local police station later visited the spot.

Contacted, Azharul Islam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Ghatail Police Station, said they have already received a complaint in this regard.

However, it will have to be confirmed whether the fish were poisoned or died of other reasons, he added.

Necessary steps will be taken after investigation, said the OC.
