Ex-Rajuk official’s wife gets 4 years’ jail term in corruption case

A Dhaka court yesterday sentenced wife of a former accounts officer of Rajuk to four years' in jail in a case filed for amassing wealth illegally and concealing wealth information to the Anti-Corruption Commission.

Judge Sheikh Hafizur Rahman of the Special Judge Court-9 of Dhaka handed down the sentence in presence of the convict, Nekles Islam.

The court sentenced her on two separate charges -- one year in jail for concealing wealth information of Tk 14.12 lakh and three years for amassing wealth of Tk 35.7 lakh through illegal means.

After the judgment, the judge sent the convict, who was on bail, to jail with conviction warrant in the case.

According to the case statement, it was alleged that the ACC in March of 2015 asked Nekles Islam to submit her wealth statement to it.

On October 7 of the same year, Nekles Islam submitted her wealth statements where the ACC found that she concealed the wealth statement of Tk 14,12,240 lakh and amassed the wealth of Tk 35,07,240 lakh unlawfully.

ACC Assistant Director Jahangir Alam filed a case against her with Ramna Police Station on September 29 of 2016.

After an investigation, the ACC submitted a charge sheet against her on July 4 of 2017.
